There are many emerging technologies for storing energy—including lithium-ion batteries, flow batteries and compressed air systems—but we are convinced that pumped storage hydropower is by far the most cost-effective, proven solution for storing the massive amounts of energy we’ll need to integrate renewables without falling back on gas-fired power plants.

Daybreak Power has identified and conducted initial screening of half-a-dozen sites in key Western-state markets where pumped storage facilities appear to be technically and commercially viable. These sites represent a combined capacity of more than 9,000 megawatts of storage and a $12 billion investment opportunity.
